Advancing Stockton Towards the Future
Stockton, CA is a city on the rise. With 320,000 residents, Stockton is a microcosm of America and diversity is our greatest asset.
Since 2012, the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition (RSSC) has built the backbone of a unique collective impact framework focused on the needs of the communities in our city most impacted by historic underinvestment, redlining, and persistent poverty. Today, it encompasses a deep community project to break down silos, build trust, and convene for sustained neighborhood transformation.
In his first two years, Mayor Tubbs secured $20M to launch a citywide college promise program (Stockton Scholars), and a $1M grant to launch the nation’s first ever mayor-led guaranteed income pilot (SEED). Stockton has also been leading a national conversation on Opportunity Zones; it was one of the first cities in the country to build an OZ investment prospectus in partnership with Accelerator for America.
Building Capacity for Non-Profit Projects
Historic disinvestment and racial segregation created pockets of poverty in South Stockton that have persisted for decades. The area developed a reputation for its poor health, crime, and blight. Today, the community is on the rise, demonstrating its trademark resilience in the face of adversity.
Understanding that the task of revitalizing this community requires collaborative solutions, RSSC utilizes a collective impact model to encourage organizations to leverage each other’s strengths to accomplish our common goals -- changing the narrative of South Stockton, empowering residents, and improving the community for future generations.
