About our group
Fight For Democracy believes that there is nothing more crucial right now in the fight against extremism than the battle for state legislatures. A lot of energy and donor dollars are directed at federal races, but it is on the state level that we are seeing a staggering number of bills that diminish the freedoms of millions of people in the U.S. Our democracy is fragile.
LGBTQ+ Rights: The Human Rights Campaign has officially declared a state of emergency for the LGBTQ+ community in America. In 2023 alone, over 76 anti-LGBTQ+ pieces of state legislation have been signed into law, more than any year on record.
Women’s Health: In the year that’s followed the end of Roe, 13 states have passed major abortion bans and 11 more states have put such stringent restrictions in place on the procedure that in many cases it is realistically impossible to have an abortion in that state.
Educational Censorship: Republican lawmakers in at least 18 states passed legislation in the past year that restricts what books students can have access to or how educators are allowed to talk about topics such as race, sexual orientation, gender identity and systemic inequality.
Voting Rights: The power to control voting rests in state capitals and in 2023, rightwing-led state legislatures have passed at least 13 restrictive voting laws in 11 states. Overall, at least 323 restrictive bills have been introduced in 45 states.
Gun Safety: 90% of the movement on gun safety in the past decade has come from state legislatures with blue majorities while state legislatures with red majorities implement concealed carry and stand your ground laws.
Climate Change: State legislative majorities can protect clean air and water and prioritize clean energy while investing in sustainable infrastructure, resilience, and innovation. And state and local governments can meet 3/4 of the US's climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The stakes have never been higher, but it can be overwhelming to know where to start or where it’s best to focus your attention and funds. For this reason, Fight For Democracy is working with The States Project. They are the foremost organization training and funding Democratic state legislature candidates in the races that matter. We will be working closely with them to make sure that your dollars are spent wisely where it is MOST NEEDED.
