What could possibly go wrong, you say? Oh scandal, illness, defection. All we need is one member to succumb and our ONE SEAT majority is toast.
2025 SPECIAL ELECTION UPDATE: On March 25th there will be a special election to fill the seat left vacant when Rep Matt Gersley OF HD-35 in Allegheny County sadly passed away in January. With this open seat, the current make-up of the PA House chamber is 101-101 — winning this district is key to protecting the 1-seat PA House majority that ImPAct the States helped to win. Holding this PA House majority is crucial to protecting Pennsylvanians from the MAGA agenda as we are seeing many MAGA majority state legislatures implementing state level Project 2025 agendas.
2024 ELECTION UPDATE: We raised $100k for PA! Our fundraising, phone banking, and canvassing for The States Project’s tipping point candidates in PA helped maintain the ONE SEAT Democratic majority in the PA State House that we won in 2022. This outcome was quite remarkable considering the Red tide that swept the state. In a year where every statewide election in Pennsylvania, from the President to the Auditor General, went for the rightwing, holding the ONE SEAT majority that we won by 63 votes in 2022 should have been impossible. But we did it!
Our hard won, ONE SEAT, Democratic majority in the PA State House, is literally the difference between women dying in hospital parking lots, education being upended, and voting access restricted. This is not a drill!
WELCOME TO IMPACT THE STATES!
Since 2020 we have raised over $150k from over 300 donors. We helped flip the PA State House blue by ONE SEAT in 2022 and held that critical majority in 2024.
In 2025, we are fundraising to protect the Democratic majority in the PA State House and fend off any special elections that may jeopardize that majority. For the next four years, the states will be the place to fight the policies of the Trump administration. And not only did our efforts and strategy supporting the PA State Legislature make a difference in 2024, but as Trump and SCOTUS remove federal rights and protections, the fight to protect people's lives and rights will fully be in the states and our work will matter even more.
ImPAct the States is a giving circle under the umbrella of The States Project, a research-driven organization focused on changing the balance of power at the state level. State legislatures have been historically underfunded by Democrats relative to more high profile senate and congressional races. Republicans, however, have invested heavily and are reaping the rewards in red majority state houses with severe anti-abortion, anti-healthcare, anti-education, and anti-voting rights, etc, policies.
The States Project is the largest donor by far to state elections and uses its data driven approach to focus *only* on winnable elections and *only* flippable state houses. Our small donations make a huge and important impact through this results driven organization. ImPAct the States is supporting Pennsylvania because it is a critical must win for democracy. We are a group of old and new friends who have come together after watching Republican-controlled State Legislatures across the country advance right-wing agendas, deny essential rights like reproductive healthcare and voting access, AND attempt to thwart our democracy. Guess what? These vital issues and more are determined in STATE CAPITALS NOT WASHINGTON DC!
WITH SO MUCH AT STAKE...
We started a States Project Giving Circle and have thrown our support behind one crucial state, Pennsylvania, as a key to stopping this march towards autocracy. Keeping in mind that The States Project DOES NOT WASTE OUR MONEY (that's why we love them,) we are working to support tipping point candidates that can impact the balance of power in Pennsylvania. Our goal is to maintain the slim Democratic majority in the State House and pursue the PA State Senate, which has been in Republican hands since 1993! .
WHY ARE WE SUPPORTING LOCAL CANDIDATES?
States Houses control much of the legislation that affects our daily lives like abortion access, healthcare for ALL, voting access, gun legislation, criminal justice, environmental regulation, education policy, GERRYMANDERING, and so much more!
It is often cheaper to change the balance of power in a state chamber than it is to win a single competitive congressional seat. So your money is POWERFUL in state elections compared to a national election. $100 spent for a state senate seat is way more impactful than $100 spent in a high profile national race. Donations to state level candidates support mailers, radio ads, and basic campaign infrastructure; spending that can make the difference for a successful campaign.
