In 2025, Outright is celebrating our 35th anniversary of protecting the human rights and improving the lives of LGBTIQ people around the world. Yet it has also been a perilous time for our global communities, as we face unprecedented threats across borders - from rising authoritarianism, to anti-LGBTIQ backlash in laws and polices, to a devastating defunding of our movement.
Recent funding cuts by the U.S. — and other governments and donors — threaten to undo decades of progress and put the lives of LGBTIQ people around the world in grave danger. More than $105 million in funding for our movement has already been eliminated from the U.S. alone and we estimate 30-40% of the total annual support for LGBTIQ organizations around the world has been lost.
Despite these challenges, we have also witnessed impressive determination and resilience from our colleagues and partners. When Outright started in 1990, no government supported us, and we are used to working in extremely harsh and repressive environments. LGBTIQ people have existed in every culture for thousands of years and no matter what, we will not be erased.
Every dollar committed now protects and empowers at-risk LGBTIQ communities worldwide, reinforcing our movement’s critical infrastructure and ability to fight back. Thank you for joining us today.
