A States Project Giving Circle

ReSisters Giving Circle

About our group

Resisting, persisting in defense of democracy and advocacy of freedom, opportunity, and justice.

In 2024, WE ARE RAISING FUNDS TO SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES in KEY STATE LEGISLATIVE RACES in MICHIGAN and ARIZONA.

The Michigan House has a ONE SEAT Democratic majority. Its loss would jeopardize the many policies passed since 2022 with a Democratic Senate and Governor (the first Dem trifecta in nearly 40 years!). These include Dem priorities like abortion access, gun control, climate legislation, LGBT rights, lower taxes, lower costs for families, student support, and worker protections and benefits. (see https://statesproject.org/state/michigan/

Increasingly purple Arizona also has a Democratic Governor, but Republicans have a ONE SEAT majority in both the House and Senate. Flipping even one chamber would force compromise on policies like the state’s near total abortion ban, public school defunding, voter suppression, and gun promotion. (see https://statesproject.org/state/arizona/)

Work by The States Project RAISES DEMOCRATIC VOTE MARGINS BY 6%!!

In 2022 and 2023, The States Project was wildly successful, flipping legislative chambers to Dem control and expanding infrastructure and partnerships that will be invaluable this year.

State governments are the laboratories for national policy on all the important issues. And State legislatures are the key to fair elections and certification of votes.

  • Each state legislative seat costs a fraction of a US Congressional or Senate race.
  • State races are often decided by just a few hundred or few thousand votes.
  • 100% of Giving Circle funds for electoral work goes to the states.

A donation is one of the best, most impactful political investments you can make.

About us

In April 2023, we were deeply saddened to report the untimely death of Lynda Myles, founder of ReSisters, the political activist group that gave rise to the ReSisters Giving Circle at The States Project. Lynda was a loving, accomplished, engaging woman who cared deeply about her country and inspired us all to work together to protect our democracy. In her honor, we rededicate ourselves to the fight and we welcome donations in tribute to her spirit.

The ReSisters group was convened by Lynda in 2016 in New York City to support Democratic candidates and promote progressive policies. Members meet weekly to exchange and discuss political information, write postcards and letters, march, call, lobby, donate, canvass, and generally agitate for democratic candidates and policies.

In September 2022, we initiated the ReSisters Giving Circle to raise funds through The States Project for state legislative races in Arizona and Michigan.

In six weeks, our small GC increased its fundraising goal twice and exceeded the final target by nearly 50%. We and our more than 100 donors were very proud to have helped Dems hold their own in AZ and flip four seats in each chamber in MI.

In 2023, we helped Virginia Dems gain control of their House and hold a majority in the Senate, preventing a Republican trifecta.
