A States Project Giving Circle

About our group
Resisting, persisting in defense of democracy.
The ReSisters Giving Circle is currently raising funds to fuel state legislative victories in North Carolina and Michigan, two states critical to the 2026 and 2028 elections.
However, the goals and context for the work in each state are very different.
In Michigan, Democrats need to flip four seats to regain control of the state House and expand their one-seat majority in the state Senate. Throughout 2025, House Republicans blocked the progressive policies that so improved lives when Democrats had complete control from 2022-2024. Democrats have a good chance of restoring that trifecta. The November 2026 ballot will be crowded with races up and down ballot: all state legislative seats, state executive positions, US Congressional races, a US Senate seat, judicial and local races, and ballot measures. That could produce momentum for Democrats at every level.

In North Carolina, right wing Republicans hold the majority in both houses, but they are being held somewhat at bay by just one Democratic seat in the House that keeps them from having the supermajority needed to override vetoes by Dem Governor Josh Stein. Though some conservative House Democrats have voted with Republicans, voters have been replacing them. The goal now is to expand the Democratic power in the House that is preventing a Republican supermajority. In 2024 Dems accomplished this, and a strong US Senate candidate is giving them the energy to do it again. Since a 2023 North Carolina law gives the legislature the authority to certify election results if the state Board of Elections deadlocks, more Democratic seats could also help to keep Republicans from obstructing certification in 2026 and 2028.

The ReSisters Giving Circle is immensely proud to have helped achieve the Democratic landslide in Virginia in 2025, in which Dems flipped 13 seats, some by very small margins, in the Virginia House. In 2023, we helped Virginia Dems defend the slimmest possible Democratic majority in the Senate and win one seat control of the House, by just 975 votes, giving them power to block the Republican Governor’s agenda.
In 2022, ReSisters helped Democrats flip four seats in each chamber in Michigan (turning both chambers blue), and we helped build power in increasingly purple Arizona toward eventual Democratic control.
State governments are now intensely important to resist destructive national policies and obstruct Republican extremism. States have been collaborative and innovative in devising workaround strategies to protect their citizens and will be key to ensuring fair elections and certification of votes.
The States Project is the only organization dedicated exclusively to winning Democratic state legislative power and helping lawmakers govern effectively. Since its founding in 2017, it has been proven to increase Dem vote share and has often been dramatically successful in shifting the balance of power.
- A state legislative campaign usually costs less than 3% of a competitive U.S. Senate race and a variable fraction of a Congressional one.
- State races are often decided by just a few hundred or few thousand votes.
- 100% of Giving Circle funds for electoral work goes to the states.
GIVE SMART, GIVE STRATEGICALLY. A donation is one of the best, most impactful political investments you can make.

About us
In April 2023, we were deeply saddened to report the untimely death of Lynda Myles, founder of ReSisters, the political activist group that gave rise to the ReSisters Giving Circle at The States Project. Lynda was a loving, accomplished, engaging woman who cared deeply about her country and inspired us all to work together to protect our democracy. In her honor, we rededicate ourselves to the fight and we welcome donations in tribute to her spirit.
The ReSisters group was convened by Lynda in 2016 in New York City to support Democratic candidates and promote progressive policies. Members meet weekly to exchange and discuss political information, write postcards and letters, march, call, lobby, donate, canvass, and generally agitate for a democratic agenda.
In September 2022, we initiated the ReSisters Giving Circle to raise funds through The States Project. We began with a goal of $5,000, met it in 48 hours, and increased it twice in that cycle. Since then, our small group and the nearly 200 friends and family members who have donated have been grateful to have this very effective way to take action.
