About our group
Equality for Flatbush (E4F) is a Black Lives Matter organization that has fought gentrification, displacement and police violence in Brooklyn, NY since 2013. We have only two goals: to end NYPD murders and to stop the displacement of low-to-middle income people from Brooklyn, NY. Led by Black and Brown lifelong and longtime New Yorkers, E4F believes in the abolition of the police, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and prisons.
E4F is a member-led grassroots organization made up largely of Black Caribbean women migrants and descendants of migrants of color. We have an holsitic , trauma-informed approach to organizing that is steeped in the principles of demonstrating “revolutionary love”, practicing kindness, being relentless, and “having each other’s backs''. There are three layers to our organizing method: 1. Triage and Rapid Response, 2. Accountability and Structural Change, and most importantly 3. Abolition. We organize our communities for social justice and change through street outreach, social media campaigns, as well as political and direct action.
Equality for Flatbush, has learned two very important things over the last 10 years: 1. Calling 911 can lead to you or your loved one being killed and 2. If you really want to stop people from being displaced, you are going to have to pay their rent.
Given the high rate of 911/ 311 calls that result in police violence and murder, E4F serves as a Brooklyn-wide Alternative to Calling 911 Hotline that rapidly responds to domestic violence, anti-BIPOC and anti-LGBTQ+ hate, elder abuse, police violence/murders, building fires, illegal evictions/lockouts, and the displacement of tenants, homeowners, small businesses and BIPOC cultural institutions. In 2022, E4F established our Emergency Housing and Rental Assistance Fund. To our knowledge Equality for Flatbush is the only grassroots organization in NYC paying peoples’ rent, re-locating survivors of violence and providing emergency housing to stop displacement.
