About our group

Our States Project Giving Circle — Chop Wood, Carry Statehouses — is raising money for state legislatures in 2026!

The gutting of the Voting Rights Act wasn't a surprise. Along with mid-decade redistricting, trying to get rid of mail-in ballots, and threats on polling places, it's part of a coordinated strategy to lock in rightwing power before voters can stop them.

But state legislatures set election rules, draw the maps, and ultimately determine who can vote and how those votes will be counted. So the rightwing can't execute these plans without governing power in the states.

And when SCOTUS gave state legislatures almost unchecked ability to draw new maps and to decide which communities' voices matter in our elections, they gave it to all state legislatures. Not just to the rightwing-controlled states that are scrambling to redraw maps ahead of November, but also to the states where we are working to build power right now, like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.

The state lawmakers who have governing power after November will be the ones deciding the maps, election rules, and ultimately, whether your vote counts ahead of 2028.

This November, we see a clear path to ensuring that lawmakers who will protect the voices of voters will have the power they need to do so — by flipping chambers, rebuilding trifectas, and breaking supermajorities.

As a reminder, these races cost a fraction of a congressional campaign, and what we raise together can meaningfully impact the outcome.

If you want to have a concrete electoral impact ASAP, joining our Giving Circle here is one of the most important and radically pragmatic actions you can take.

Beyond pragmatism, it's important to stay connected over the principles we share. I want to keep working toward a better future together, meaningfully, year after year, with you!

Political giving can be confusing and overwhelming — especially downballot. The States Project zeroes in on the potential tipping point seats in each state where they work, targeting the districts needed to to win governing power with research-based precision. So I've organized a Giving Circle that builds power in the states, where it matters most — here’s why:

If you care about Congress, you should care about state legislatures because they draw the district lines that decide who goes to Congress.

If you care about the Supreme Court, you should care about state legislatures because the Supreme Court doesn’t write laws; they rule on laws! Many of these laws are written by state lawmakers, like the Mississippi abortion ban that took down Roe.

If you care about the Presidency, you should care about state legislatures because they control voting rights in their states (who is eligible to vote, where, when and how).

The States Project works to elect majorities that fight for the issues we care about, including protecting democracy in 2026.
