Like you, we are worried about the future of American democracy. The Republican party is becoming increasingly authoritarian. In 2020 the Republicans won the majority of state chambers; it is all the more crucial for Democrats to get out the vote in future elections.

We can make an enormous difference by flipping key red and purple state legislatures. To help in this effort, we have initiated this Blue Saguaro Giving Circle as part of The States Project, an organization working to shift the balance of power in the states. We are focusing on Arizona.

WHY STATES' LEGISLATURES?

Voting rights: Republican-dominated state legislatures have passed thousands of laws trashing fundamental freedoms and the quality of life, restricting voting, banning and criminalizing abortion, limiting access to health care and expanding gun “rights.” If allowed to stand, their newly enacted voting restrictions (particularly in swing states such as Arizona) will likely determine the outcomes of the 2024 national elections.

Changing state legislative majorities this year would mean, in particular, restoring voting rights for millions before the 2024 election.

Value: In contrast to the sky-high costs of federal elections, even $10,000 can make the difference between winning and losing a state-level race. The States Project targets purple and red states where relatively modest amounts can break a GOP supermajority or flip a legislative chamber.

Supporting state legislative candidates is also a cost-effective way to get out the vote for national as well as statewide races. THIS IS ESPECIALLY CRUCIAL THIS YEAR, as voters in Arizona will also be electing a new governor and Secretary of State who will oversee the 2024 elections.

WHY ARIZONA? THIS SWING STATE IS WINNABLE!

In each chamber of the Arizona legislature, Republicans hold only a two-seat majority, which they won in 2020 by the thinnest margins in a century! If only 1,028 of the nearly 3.8 million votes had flipped (0.03%!), the Arizona House majority would have been broken; just 2,338 votes (0.06%) changing would have flipped the state Senate as well.

In Arizona, an independent commission rather than the legislature conducts post-Census redistricting, so voters there will not have to contend with extreme partisan gerrymandering.

EARLY MONEY IS CRUCIAL. Starting now, we can support candidates in every flippable Arizona district and protect threatened Democratic incumbents. Within Arizona and its other target states for 2022 The States Project has already initiated programs involving candidate recruitment, deep canvassing, and hiring key campaign staff —all potentially game-changing tactics.
