The Urban Bicycle Food Ministry - Des Moines is a community-based and non-denominational organization. Everyone is welcome to be a part of this ministry. We do not preach, proselytize, or try to convert. Since 2015, we have been serving radical hospitality — one burrito at a time. What is “radical hospitality”? Every Thursday, all year long, we prepare and deliver hundreds of food and personal items by bike and car to people on the streets, who might be living under a bridge, in a tent next to the river or railroad tracks, or a hole dug in the side of a hill, or subsidized housing. Think “Uber Eats” for people without addresses or the ability to pay.
To support children and families who have escaped abusive situations. the freestore collects furniture and household goods donated by members of the community and gives them (at no cost) to clients of domestic violence services and other agencies as these families begin new independent, productive lives in safe environments. freestore served 336 families in 2019.
