Why I joined Plano Women for Good
I make a living by what I get, however I believe you make a life by what you give. As a woman in a male dominated industry, I have faced many obstacles in my professional journey over the past 14 years. I have a burning desire to empower women (specifically young women) and be a mentor for women who may believe that career success just isn't in the cards for them. I grew up in a very small town in Missouri, and moved to Texas in 2008 to chase a dream. What dream? I had no idea! All I knew is that there had to be something more out there for me than gravel roads and a population of 4300. What better state to explore than the great state of Texas? I was in school pursuing my degree in early childhood education when I took an admin position at an energy consulting brokerage firm. I was intrigued! For one of the first times ever in my life, at a ripe age of 19, I was surrounded by a diverse group of people who all had one thing in common - they were successful! (well, I supposed 2 things in common, because the majority of the top earners and professionals of "status" were also predominantly male) I realized very early that it didn't matter where I came from, what you look like, what university you attended or your annual household income - all that mattered is what was driving me on the inside. Have I had to work twice as hard as some of my male counterparts? Without a question. However, I never let that slow me down. In full transparency, I never thought success was in the cards for me. I didn't feel worthy or capable, and suffered from imposter syndrome early in my career. I eventually re-taught my self who I was, showed my industry (and myself!) what I was capable of, and the "student" became the professor. In 2017 I decided to leave that brokerage firm, and started my own company. My company has been a force to be reckoned with in our industry since, and is one of the few woman owned brokerage firms in Texas. I have been able to give back by creating hundreds (thousands over the years) of opportunities for others and have been able to mentor so many young women who also have not fully learned their full potential. Empowered women empower women - so let's change the world!
