A States Project Giving Circle

About our group

The Potlucks and Politics Giving Circle is a community of friends dedicated to defending democracy. We have the great good fortune to live in a country that holds democratic ideals, but we have learned that democracy needs our active engagement in order to live and grow.

Knowing how and where to begin to be involved can be overwhelming, but a good place to start is by helping elect Democrats to state legislatures.

We have chosen to work with The States Project, an organization focused on changing the balance of power in state legislatures. Because state legislatures hold so much power in areas such as gun control, abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, climate policy and more, relatively small amounts of money can shift power to yield rapid and meaningful change for millions of people. In 2022, the first year of our Giving Circle, we raised over $10,000 to support state legislative candidates in the key swing state of Michigan. The money we raised supported candidates in tipping point districts, helping them run more effective campaigns. We had the satisfaction of being part of the over-the-top-success in flipping BOTH legislative chambers. Michigan's new trifecta, is now poised to enact gun control laws for the first time in many years.

The members of state legislatures make the rules for their state’s elections, pass laws to make it either easy or hard to vote, and approve district boundaries that are either fair or gerrymandered. Soon, the Supreme Court may rule in favor of the "Independent State Legislators" theory, a radical reading of the law which would allow state legislatures to decide whether they will send the presidential electors chosen by the voters to Congress, or if the party in power can legally send “alternate electors” for the candidate of the opposing party. You can see how high the stakes are, why the focus on State Legislatures is critical to defending Democracy, and why we have aligned with The States Project.

We invite you to join our giving circle where we combine community, events, activism, and fundraising to protect our democracy into the future.

The PAC for America’s Future administers our donations to The States Project electoral work. 100% of the amount we raise goes out the door to the state that we choose to target. No part of your donation goes to overhead costs.
