A States Project Giving Circle
About our group
Welcome to the Fired Up for Democracy Giving Circle. Last year we raised over $14,000 for the States Project and helped flip the State House in Pennsylvania, which now has a new Democratic majority for the first time in 12 years!
As we see more and more states enacting legislation to infringe on basic voting rights, take away reproductive health care, and block progress on necessary climate action, we keep thinking about what we are doing to help our democracy.
Figuring out where we can make the most impact is hard. Maria has been politically active all of her life (thanks in large part to her parents’ influence). Jenny is much newer to this field. Together we’ve participated in the Women’s March and knocked on doors to get out the vote in Pennsylvania. We’ve also both done a fair amount of “panic giving” around previous elections. As we look down the barrel of 2022 - we want to make sure we are being as strategic as possible with our time and resources.
That’s why we started the Fired Up for Democracy Giving Circle with The States Project. The States Project works to change the balance of power in state legislatures, where relatively small amounts of money can shift power in state houses, which can yield rapid and meaningful change for people all across the country.
State legislatures are where gerrymandering and voter suppression begins, and where issues related to protecting basic human and civil rights are decided, and where policy innovation occurs, for good - like universal healthcare - or for ill - like Texas’s anti-abortion law.
